Overview
Babylonia was an ancient Akkadian-speaking state and cultural area based on the city of Babylon in central-southern Mesopotamia, emerging as an Akkadian-populated but Amorite-ruled state around 1894 BC. It was a major power in the region after Hammurabi created a short-lived empire, but rapidly fell apart after his death. Babylonia was often involved in rivalry with the linguistically related state of Assyria and with Elam to the east. The city of Babylon was a significant cultural and economic center, with influences from the Akkadian Empire, the Third Dynasty of Ur, and the Old Assyrian Empire.
